Radiotherapy Department at Wanless Hospital, Miraj

The Charles Edward Vail Memorial Cancer Institute (CEVMC) operates as a core unit of Wanless Hospital, Miraj. It carries the name of Dr. Charles Edward Vail, a tribute that keeps his legacy alive within the hospital he helped shape.

The institute traces its origins to 1910, when Dr. Vail arrived in Miraj to serve alongside our founder, Dr. Wanless. The sheer number of cancer patients he encountered left a deep impression on him. A skilled surgeon, Dr. Vail soon started performing cancer operations, and a dedicated wing was established for their care.

Pioneering Radiotherapy in Miraj

Dr. Vail recognised early that surgery alone could not address every cancer case. He arranged for radium needles to be brought from Germany, and on 29th November 1930 a patient with cancer of the eyelid was treated successfully through radium needle implants. During the 1950s, superficial and deep X-ray therapy machines joined the department, expanding its capabilities further.

From those modest beginnings, the department has developed into a modern treatment centre. It now houses a state-of-the-art cobalt unit, the Theratron Phoenix, which is equipped to treat the full range of solid tumours.

Multidisciplinary Cancer Care

Because cancer treatment is multimodal, chemotherapy is frequently administered alongside radiotherapy. The Radiation Oncology department therefore holds joint clinics together with other units, including a Head & Neck clinic every Thursday and a Gynae Oncology clinic every Tuesday, among others.
