Our Mission

Miraj Medical Centre (MMC) exists chiefly to provide quality medical care and education with compassion — a visible witness carried out through the healing ministry of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Our History

More than a hundred years ago this pioneering medical institution took shape in the humblest of settings. In the 19th century a young Canadian missionary doctor, William Wanless, came to India with his wife Mary. In November 1891 the couple reached the Western India Mission at Sangli, Maharashtra, to settle and serve the people of the Sangli-Miraj region.

Armed with a vision and a donation of only 40 cents, Dr. Wanless selected the small town of Miraj for the mission hospital. It opened in 1891 as a single-room dispensary in rented premises in the busy bazaar, with Mrs. Wanless, a trained nurse, at his side. Support from the Rajah of Miraj made it possible to obtain land for a hospital.

The Medical Mission put down roots, and so began the Mission Hospital — which over the past century has grown into an institution made up of a 550-bed teaching hospital affiliated with the Government Medical College, a College of Nursing, an Institute of Pharmacy and a range of paramedical programmes.
