AIDS  COUNSELING

Counseling and de-addiction centre has been playing a supportive role in showing right path to the individuals and coping with the increasing problems of HIV- AIDS and addiction/ substance abuse.

Other Programs with other Organizations:

The programmes for Prevention of MTCT (PMTCT) Can Make a Difference:

PMTCT programmes can save almost 50 to 70% of these children from getting infected.  So, almost 20,000 children could be saved every year in India, if all pregnant women can get the necessary help.  A tall order indeed, but ours is a small step in that direction.  Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV is a programme that strives to protect every child from the dreaded infection.  PMTCT aims at ensuring an HIV free next generation.  This is its promise and its commitment.

What is the Prayas PMTCT Project?

Prayas is a Pune based NGO active on the educational, environmental, and public health (HIV) fronts for the last few years.  PRAYAS Health Group has initiated and carried out a steady campaign to raise the level of public awareness about HIV/AIDS to systematically eradicate the attitudes of fear, misunderstanding, and discrimination against victims of AIDS and to give them moreal and medical support to survive and lead dignified and socially supported lives in their otherwise isolated and lonely struggle.

The Elizabeth Glaser Paediatric AIDS Foundation, USA has funded a PMTCT programme for the years 2002-2004 in different parts of India.  They are supporting PRAYAS to launch a pgromme that will cover 12,000 pregnant women.

What Does The PRAYAS PMTCT Programme Offer to Pregnant Women?

1.  Pre-test counselling.

2. HIV Screening.

3.  Post-test counselling to both HIV negative and HIV positive women.

4.  Antiretroviral medicines to HIV positive women to protect the child.

5.  Obstetric care.

6.  Post-partum prophylactic medicines for the infants.

7.  Guidance regarding infant feeding.

8.  Laboratory facilities for diagnosis of infection in the child.
