    NEW THERATRON-PHEONIX UNIT :-

Radiotherapy Department :-

Information, Justification request for grant : - Wanless Hospital, Miraj Medical Centre, Miraj is a pioneer institute in Cancer treatment with radiation. Dr. Charles Vail started a Radiation Institute in 1931 after bringing 104 milligrams of Radium - a gift from his friend in America in 1930. This institute was modelled on the standards set by the American College of Surgeons. Millions of patients were treated for Contact Therapy & Roentgen Therapy with the help of deep x-ray unit - Chaoul Tube - the first in Asia installed in 1935 untill a "Cobalt 60" Theratron Unit was inaugarated and put into use at the hands of Hon'ble Dr.Chandrashekhar then Union Health Minister in 1968. This Cobalt source came as a donation under "Colombo Plan" and was the only Source available for Cancer treatment to the people of this area after Bombay. Patients from nearby areas are referred back to our hospital by the Tata Memorial Hospital, Bombay. Because of this pioneering work in cancer treatment, patients from an area of 250 kms. radius with a total population of about 25 million come to our popularly known "Mission Hospital", and we would like to continue this long standing tradition of dedicated service in the spirit of christian love and compassion by adding versatile and practicable reliable basic, economical unit - THERATRON PHEONIX.

Today the cost of such unit is upto Rs. 2 crores and another 50 lakhs are required to modify the existing building structure according to drawings approved by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai.

A proposal recommended by the Govt. of Maharashtra for grant-in-aid of Rs. 1 crore is pending before the standing committee for the Radiotherapy Development Programme, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, under its "Scheme for Improvement of Medical Services" for approval.

Because of limited resources it is not possible to bear the entire cost of highly expensive ultra-modern equipment like
"THERATRON PHEONIX"
hence financial assistance and generous donations are solicited, to continue the pioneering missionary services in Cancer treatment with radiation.
