Community Outreach

Miraj Medical Centre’s work reaches far afield through the Department of Community Health and the Mobile Eye Hospital Project.

The Department of Community Health (DCH)  is located at Mother & Child Care Centre &  has developed model programmes of preventive health care, health education and community development in five villages with a total population of 50,000 and two urban centres. The program plans to expand its services to more villages.

        Women Empowerment Programme

    Balwadi - Creche Programme at
   DCH

The Balwadi - crèche programme sets up village feeding centres where children receive a nutritious meal each day plus special attention, loving care along with the vital immunizations.

Through involvement entire families benefit, as the village women come together in ‘mahila  mandal’  i.e. women’s club. This helps them to learn more about nutrition, personal hygiene, child care, family planning and even money-making skills like sewing, broom-making, paper-bag making, poultry farming, goat-rearing etc. Literary classes are offered in the evenings.

Through the Women Empowerment Programme, DCH also trains the village women to act as community health volunteers and  to provide primary health care to their folks. Village midwives learn basic aseptic techniques which drastically lower infant mortality. Immunization and Family Planning are the vital parts of the programme.  A team of trained and qualified dietitians provide dietary advice to patients and a team of medical social workers/community health workers provide emotional support to the patients.

Paediatric Diagnostic Camp

      ENT Diagnostic Camp

The Mobile Eye Hospital Project (MEHP) with support from Germany’s Christoffel Blinden Mission (CBM) carries the gift of sight to people who otherwise would receive no treatment for cataracts and other eye diseases. The stated goal is to provide sight to the curable blind.

Patients Operated (Cataract Surgery)

    FREE EYE CAMPS

Several times each month, a team of ophthalmologists and nurses travel to remote villages to stage a free Eye Camp. Hundreds of patients gather from miles around, waiting anxiously for the doctors who can make them see again. The team performs sight-giving cataract operations and provides medicines free of cost to those who need them.
